What is sermorelin?
Sermorelin is a growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) analog. Rather than introducing synthetic growth hormone, it prompts your pituitary gland to release more of your own — in the natural pulsatile rhythm your body already uses, mostly during deep sleep.
At Origin Wellness, sermorelin is prescribed in protocols tailored by sex. For men, the emphasis is typically lean mass, recovery capacity, sleep quality, and energy. For women, the emphasis is more often body composition, skin and hair quality, sleep, and the recovery that supports training through midlife hormonal change.
How sermorelin works
Growth hormone output peaks in early adulthood and declines steadily afterward. That decline contributes to slower recovery, easier fat gain, thinner skin, and lighter sleep. Direct HGH replacement overrides the system; sermorelin works upstream of it.
By stimulating the pituitary through the GHRH receptor, sermorelin preserves the body's own feedback loops. Somatostatin — the brake on GH release — still functions, which is why sermorelin is generally considered to have a more favorable safety profile than exogenous growth hormone and why the effect builds gradually over months rather than immediately.
Researched benefits
Lean mass and body composition
Improved GH signaling supports lean tissue retention and fat metabolism, particularly when paired with resistance training and adequate protein.
Deeper sleep
Because GH release is tied to slow-wave sleep, many clients report the sleep improvement first — often within the first few weeks of a protocol.
Faster recovery
Better recovery between training sessions is one of the most consistent reports, especially for clients training hard in their forties and beyond.
Skin, hair, and vitality
Collagen turnover, skin quality, and general energy commonly improve over a full cycle as GH and IGF-1 levels move back toward youthful ranges.
Sermorelin has an established clinical history as a GHRH analog, though long-term outcome data in healthy adults is more limited than its mechanistic rationale. Protocols are always monitored with labs.
How sermorelin is dosed
There is no single correct dose. Sermorelin protocols are individualized based on baseline IGF-1 labs, age, sex, training load, and goals, then adjusted at follow-up as labs and symptoms are reviewed.
At Origin Wellness, sermorelin is prescribed as a subcutaneous injection compounded by our licensed 503(A) pharmacy partner. It is typically injected at night, before bed, to align with the body's natural GH pulse.
Injectable (subcutaneous)
Injected into fatty tissue — commonly the abdomen — most often nightly on a five-days-on schedule, taken on an empty stomach before sleep. Your clinician sets the dose, weekly pattern, and cycle length and reviews IGF-1 at follow-up.
At Origin Wellness, dosing is never self-directed. Your protocol is written by a licensed physician after reviewing your assessment, and it is adjusted at follow-up based on your response. Read more about how that review works on our approach page.
Safety, side effects, and who should avoid it
The most common side effects are injection-site redness or itching, flushing, and occasional headache or vivid dreams early in a protocol. Water retention or tingling in the hands can indicate the dose is too high and is addressed by adjusting downward.
Because sermorelin raises IGF-1, it requires baseline and follow-up lab monitoring and careful screening.
- • Not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- • Contraindicated with an active malignancy; prior cancer history requires clinician review because IGF-1 is a growth signal.
- • Requires review with untreated thyroid disease, which blunts the GH response, or with diabetes, since GH affects glucose handling.
- • Prohibited by WADA — not suitable for athletes subject to competitive drug testing.
How sermorelin fits into a full protocol
Sermorelin amplifies recovery; it does not create a training stimulus or fix a sleep schedule. The clients who get the most from it are training consistently, eating enough protein, and protecting sleep — because that is when the GH pulse happens.
Protocols include baseline and follow-up labs, and are frequently paired with DEXA body composition scans and a coaching program — Origin Balance for women or Origin Peak for men.

Frequently asked questions
What is sermorelin used for?
Sermorelin is a GHRH analog prescribed to stimulate the body's own growth hormone release. It is used to support lean mass, recovery, sleep quality, skin and hair, and energy in adults with age-related GH decline.
How is sermorelin different from HGH?
HGH introduces synthetic growth hormone directly and overrides the body's feedback loops. Sermorelin stimulates the pituitary to release your own GH in its natural pulsatile rhythm, which preserves regulation and is generally considered to have a more favorable safety profile.
Is sermorelin different for men and women?
The molecule is the same; the protocol is not. Dosing and goals are individualized — men's protocols more often emphasize lean mass, recovery, and energy, while women's protocols more often emphasize body composition, skin and hair, sleep, and recovery through midlife hormonal change.
How is sermorelin taken?
At Origin Wellness, sermorelin is prescribed only as a subcutaneous injection, typically taken at night before bed on an empty stomach to align with your natural GH pulse. Dose and schedule are set by your prescribing clinician.
How long before sermorelin works?
Sleep improvements are often noticed within the first few weeks. Body composition, recovery, and skin changes generally require three to six months of consistent use, with IGF-1 labs reviewed along the way.
What are the side effects of sermorelin?
Most commonly injection-site irritation, flushing, headache, or vivid dreams early on. Water retention or hand tingling can signal too high a dose. It is contraindicated with active malignancy and during pregnancy, and requires lab monitoring throughout.
