What is glutathione?

Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamine, cysteine, and glycine produced in every cell in your body. It is often called the master antioxidant because it is the primary molecule your cells use to neutralize oxidative damage and because it regenerates other antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, after they have been spent.

Levels drop with age and are depleted faster by alcohol, medication load, chronic inflammation, poor sleep, intense training, and environmental exposure. At Origin Wellness, glutathione is prescribed for clients focused on detoxification support, immune resilience, recovery, and skin clarity.

How glutathione works

Glutathione donates electrons to neutralize free radicals, converting itself to an oxidized form that the body then recycles. This cycle is your cells' front-line defense against the oxidative stress produced by normal metabolism, exercise, and environmental exposure.

It also plays a direct role in liver phase II detoxification, binding to toxins and metabolic byproducts so they can be safely eliminated. Additionally, glutathione inhibits tyrosinase — the enzyme responsible for melanin production — which is the mechanism behind its widely reported effect on skin brightness and evenness of tone.

Researched benefits

Antioxidant and cellular defense

Glutathione neutralizes free radicals directly and regenerates other spent antioxidants, protecting cell membranes, proteins, and DNA from oxidative damage.

Detoxification support

Central to liver phase II detoxification, glutathione binds toxins and metabolic byproducts for elimination — relevant for high medication load, alcohol exposure, or environmental burden.

Immune resilience

Immune cells depend on glutathione to function under oxidative stress. Adequate levels support a more measured immune response, particularly during travel or high-stress periods.

Skin clarity and brightness

By inhibiting tyrosinase and reducing oxidative load, glutathione is widely used for a brighter, more even complexion over a full cycle.

Glutathione's role in antioxidant defense and detoxification is well established biochemically; clinical outcome data for injectable supplementation in healthy adults is more limited. Protocols are supervised and cycled.

How glutathione is dosed

There is no single correct dose. Glutathione protocols are usually run as a defined cycle with a set weekly frequency, then reviewed — the goal is to relieve oxidative load during a specific period rather than to supplement indefinitely.

At Origin Wellness, glutathione is prescribed as a subcutaneous injection compounded by our licensed 503(A) pharmacy partner.

  • Injectable (subcutaneous)

Injected into fatty tissue, usually the abdomen, one to three times per week during a cycle of four to twelve weeks. Your clinician sets the dose and frequency based on your goals and reviews response at follow-up.

At Origin Wellness, dosing is never self-directed. Your protocol is written by a licensed physician after reviewing your assessment, and it is adjusted at follow-up based on your response. Read more about how that review works on our approach page.

Safety, side effects, and who should avoid it

Glutathione is generally well tolerated. The most common effects are injection-site irritation, occasional mild bloating, or a temporary sulfur-like taste or smell after dosing. Skin lightening is a known effect for some clients and should be a considered choice rather than a surprise.

As with every protocol we prescribe, screening and follow-up are part of the process.

  • Not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Requires clinician review with asthma, as sulfur-containing compounds can occasionally trigger symptoms.
  • Requires review with significant kidney or liver impairment.
  • Disclose all medications and supplements, particularly chemotherapy agents, whose activity can be affected by antioxidant load.

How glutathione fits into a full protocol

Antioxidant support works best when the load creating the demand is also addressed — alcohol, sleep debt, training volume, and unmanaged inflammation. We look at those alongside your protocol rather than treating glutathione as a standalone fix.

It is commonly prescribed with a longevity, recovery, or aesthetic protocol and paired with a coaching program — Origin Balance for women or Origin Peak for men.

Frequently asked questions

What is glutathione used for?

Glutathione is prescribed for antioxidant and cellular defense, liver detoxification support, immune resilience, recovery, and skin clarity. It is the body's primary antioxidant and declines with age, stress, alcohol, and inflammation.

What are the benefits of glutathione injections?

Reported benefits include reduced oxidative stress, improved detoxification capacity, better immune resilience, faster recovery from training and travel, and a brighter, more even skin tone.

How is glutathione taken?

At Origin Wellness, glutathione is prescribed only as a subcutaneous injection, typically one to three times per week during a defined cycle. Dose and frequency are set by your prescribing clinician.

How long does a glutathione protocol run?

Most cycles run four to twelve weeks, with response reviewed by the medical team before continuing, adjusting, or pausing. Skin-related changes generally require a full cycle.

Does glutathione lighten skin?

Glutathione inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that produces melanin, so some clients see a brighter and more even complexion. This effect varies by individual and should be an intentional part of your goals discussed with your clinician.

Is glutathione safe?

It is generally well tolerated. Injection-site irritation, mild bloating, or a temporary sulfur-like taste are the most common effects. It requires clinician review with asthma, kidney or liver impairment, and is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
